In 2012, Franklin Pierce University, a small, private, rural New England university unveiled their curricular redesign.  Based on AAC&U’s Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP) Essential Learning Outcomes and Principles of Excellence, the updated curriculum focuses on preparing students for professional success through a liberal education, in both general education and major courses.  The plan, titled Liberal Education and the Pierce Promise, is centered around four learning outcomes: 1) knowledge and understanding, 2) intellectual and practical skills, 3) personal and social responsibility, and 4) engaged learning and thinking. The program also incorporates several high-impact practices, such as co-curricular internships.  It represents a shift toward a learning-centered approach to undergraduate education, encouraging students to take a more active role in the educational process.  Liberal Education and the Pierce Promise launched with the enrollment of the class of 2016.  It included fourteen new general and liberal education courses, with additional courses to be added in the following years.  For more information on Liberal Education and the Pierce Promise, see the press release here.
